Jog4Joy presented by Wells Fargo – Supporting Mental and Emotional Wellness

Today is the beginning of a very important relationship.

I AM THRILLED AND HONOURED TO ANNOUNCE WELLS FARGO AS TITLE SPONSOR FOR JOG4JOY!

Jog4Joy presented by Wells Fargo, along with our partner The Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation recognize that mental and emotional wellness MUST be a PRIORITY. Our families are affected. Our friends are affected. Our community is affected.

Jog4Joy appreciates how much Wells Fargo cares about their communities:

In 2011, Wells Fargo invested 213.5 million dollars in 19,000 non profits surpassing 200 million for the fourth consecutive year. For the third year in a row, United Way Worldwide has named Wells Fargo’s annual Community Support and Annual Campaign the No. 1 Giving Campaign. Wells Fargo’s success comes from a time tested formula: LOCAL people making local decisions because they know what their communities need.

I met with Senior Vice President and Regional Manager for Western Canada, John Davis, here in Vancouver and we discussed the importance of MENTAL and EMOTIONAL WELLNESS. We talked about how mental illness affects QUALITY OF LIFE, FAMILIES and our COMMUNITY as a whole.

If you have read my blog before, you know that I speak from the heart. Although, Wells Fargo is the largest bank in the Western world I can honestly say, they also have a big heart. When I met with John Davis he is not just a ‘suit’…he is a kind man…approachable, genuine and authentic and he understands how important this issue is in our community, province and country.

Jog4Joy also resonated with the Wells Fargo vision and values:

HONESTY, TRUST and INTEGRITY are essential for meeting the highest standards of corporate governance…corporations don’t have a conscience. People do. Our ethics are the sum of all the decisions each of us makes every day. If you want to find out how strong a company’s ethics are, don’t listen to what its people say. Watch what they do.

I also love their ‘signature’:

Together, we’ll go far.

Yes! Collectively we can make a difference! That includes you, me, Wells Fargo, The Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation and anyone else who wants to step up and help us create change.

Did you know that according to an article from the World Federation for Mental Health, DEPRESSION will be the second leading cause of world disability in 2020 with it reaching the number one cause of global disabilities by 2030?

Those statistics are alarming so what can YOU do to HELP?

TRAIN 4 Your BRAIN

I believe EXERCISE is crucial to aiding and maintaining a healthy mental and emotional life.

I am not a doctor nor am I a fitness trainer; however, I am a woman that went from a fairly consistent depressive and anxious state, riddled with toxic relationships and an abusive background, to someone who now PASSIONATELY ENJOYS and EMBRACES LIFE. I personally experienced the shift that exercise created.

I jog, so I will use jogging as an example; however, cycling, hiking, skiing, rowing, or boxing etc., are also applicable.

Here are my top 4 reasons to Train4YourBRAIN:

MANAGE STRESS:

Jogging is an outlet for stress, anxiety, anger, frustration, sadness and irritability. It gives you a PHYSICAL outlet to release those inner emotions. In very basic terms, I believe emotions stick to your body on a cellular level, so exercise shakes things up and creates a different energy. I find, the greater the problem or emotion, the longer the jog or the steeper the hill. I match the emotional intensity to the physical intensity. Is it difficult? Sure, but the emotional pain is worse and this gives me a healthy way to deal with it.

MEDITATION:

Jogging gives you time to think through things or if you need to REST YOUR BRAIN, it gives you a chance to listen to music, or the consistent pattern of your feet hitting the ground as a meditative tool. It is a way to CLEAR YOUR MIND and create a natural peace and calm.

HABIT:

Jogging creates habit in your life. HABITS ARE HELPFUL IF THEY ARE HEALTHY. By sticking to a routine, your brain becomes used to that hit of endorphins (nature’s natural happy drug) and you begin to see and feel the change in your life. THIS TAKES TIME. I began from the very very basics (jogging one minute, walking 4 minutes for a total of 15 minutes then literally going to bed) so it took me about three weeks to a month to see and feel the benefits MENTALLY.

SELF ESTEEM:

I was really surprised how exercise helped my self esteem, giving me a quiet confidence I could never sustain prior to exercising. The endorphins make you feel happy but the GOALS you create, work towards and ultimately ACHIEVE creates a personal inner strength that translates into other areas of your life. Although you can still have low self-esteem if you exercise, I think if you process your emotions (Why are you feeling insecure?) as you exercise, you’ll find some answers which will help you become stronger mentally and emotionally. This has been my experience.

CHALLENGING YOURSELF PHYSICALLY CAN ONLY AID IN YOUR TOTAL HEALTH.

It helps the BRAIN become clearer in thoughts and can aid in lifting depression or assisting with anxiety. It helps the HEART process emotion and it helps the BODY become stronger and better able to fight disease.

TRAIN FOR YOUR BRAIN.

Emotional Bravery

I had a week full of human heart connections.

With each conversation I was humbled by people’s BRAVERY. I am always honoured when people open up and speak from their heart. It takes COURAGE to tell your story when there is pain and struggle involved and the risk that you may be judged, criticized or be the topic of gossip.

I BELIEVE VULNERABILITY IS DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO BRAVERY.

How? Because it does not come from being weak; it comes from despite being afraid, you find the STRENGTH to be OPEN. It takes enormous COURAGE to be vulnerable in a world that deems it as a weakness.

THE REALITY IS WE ARE ALL BRAVE, FIGHTING OUR EMOTIONAL BATTLES.

Both men and women have their struggles and it takes COURAGE to talk about it. I think women are more open to conversations because men have been brought up to believe that in order to be strong and a ‘real’ man, you must push through your emotions and not show how you feel.

Tears are not manly.

I TOTALLY DISAGREE.

I have the deepest RESPECT for men (and women) who share their feelings going against what they’ve been told and instead honouring their heart and their experiences. I think it shows DEPTH, COURAGE and STRENGTH to understand and show emotion and is the opposite of weakness.

If we are completely honest, we have ALL experienced some sort of pain whether it’s a broken heart, grief, trauma or hardships. We’ve all experienced stress and we all continue to wake up each morning to take on the day despite what happened the day prior.

Everyone’s emotional battle is unique to them but ultimately it will resonate with someone else. We are connected by heart and by pain. We are connected because we continue to fight. We are ultimately STRONGER, BRAVER and have a greater capacity to LOVE than we think possible.

Emotional bravery means you recognize and honour your pain.

You understand that you are a SURVIVOR and you have enormous STRENGTH to come through your experience.

  • I honour you.
  • I honour your emotional journey.
  • I honour your courage to be vulnerable.
  • I honour your will to survive.
  • I honour your tears.

YOU ARE BRAVE. YOU ARE STRONG. YOU ARE A SURVIVOR.

With a smile,

Tina

No Training, No Run Club, No Clue!

I started jogging because I wanted to do something different in my life. When I decided to run 40 kilometers on my 40th birthday I had NO IDEA how far that was, or really what kind of commitment it would take. I made THE DECISION naively and then I honoured the commitment to mySELF, moving forward, one small step at a time.

I had NO TRAINING, NO RUN CLUB, NO ONE TO RUN WITH, and in the beginning NO PROPER RUNNING GEAR.

I literally had NOTHING but my sheer DETERMINATION to honour a PROMISE I made to mySELF so that I could live a better life.

By trial and error, I figured things out and then something wonderful began to happen. This MIRACLE did not happen overnight, it took time but when I documented it, I realized that things were starting to shift…

I discovered:

  • Jogging lifted my depression.
  • Jogging helped me manage anxiety, anger, sadness and stress.
  • Jogging gave me SELF ESTEEM and continues to build my CONFIDENCE.
  • Jogging made me emotionally stronger.
  • Jogging helped me tap into my INSTINCT.
  • Jogging gave me JOY! (For someone who HATED exercise, this was a miracle to me!)

Jogging became my counsellor, friend, confidante, and punching bag. It became my outlet for all other things in my life; a way to cope with my past pain, present stress and fears of the future.

Jogging was the vehicle I needed to create the necessary shift in my life to get out of the negative patterns and toxic relationships. It raised me up, PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY and EMOTIONALLY and I will forever be GRATEFUL for the day I decided to run.

If you can’t jog, find something that resonates with you. It’s about honouring a goal to yourSELF, engaging in physical activity, having a cardio workout that gets your blood pumping and enJOYing the happy endorphins that kick in.

It will be the best thing you do in your life, for your life.

It gives you a reason to CELEBRATE your ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

I JOG FOR MY MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLNESS.

I JOG4JOY!

It’s going to be another beautiful weekend, so get out there and start walking, cycling, hiking, jogging, or swimming!

See you on Tuesday!

With a smile,

Tina

Law of Attraction

What does the Law of Attraction mean to you?

When I looked in the mirror, staring deep into my eyes and recited affirmations, I thought I knew what it meant. Today I think it’s powerful but often misunderstood.

Like millions of people I read “The Secret”. During that time in my life I was in and out of a highly toxic, controlling relationship, suffered from extreme anxiety and dark depressions. I loved my work but isolated from my friends and family. I struggled through my life wishing, hoping and yearning for something better.

I just wanted life to be a little easier…

I read about the Law of Attraction and I began focusing on my thinking.

I visualized what I wanted: a life full of love, happiness, honesty and authenticity. I wanted a nice place to live, a better car and a man who really loved me. I wanted to take regular holidays and have financial freedom. I wished for a better life so I started thinking and journaling about this “other life” I desired.

What I failed to understand (this is the embarrassing part) was that I had to DO something about it!

When you are depressed, anxious and in a toxic relationship it’s very difficult to motivate yourself and create change if you are exhausted and feeling such despair. I understand this to my core so I have great compassion for myself; however, I also know the hard truth. I was looking for the ‘EASY BUTTON’.

There is no easy button when it comes to change…there is only the DECISION TO CHANGE, and the TIME, COMMITMENT and HARD WORK it takes to get there.

It is by no coincidence then that it is called the law of AttrACTION…

  • YOU DECIDE to work on your THOUGHTS and create a more POSITIVE inner world.
  • YOU COMMIT to creating POSITIVE change.
  • YOU CREATE a PLAN about how you are going to get what you desire.
  • YOU WORK towards your GOALS one step at a time.
  • YOU CELEBRATE your SUCCESS.

ALL THOSE STEPS INVOLVE ACTION AND THROUGH ACTION, YOU WILL ATTRACT POSITIVE RESULTS.

Law of attrACTION is the LAW OF ACTION.

Nothing gets done by just thinking about it…you have to DO something.

ACTION CREATES RESULTS.

  • POSITIVE THINKING is part of the ACTION PLAN.
  • VISUALIZING is part of the ACTION PLAN.
  • DOING is part of the ACTION PLAN.

Making a DECISION, COMMITTING to that DECISION and then ACTIVELY WORKING towards that GOAL will get you much further than just thinking about it.

If you suffer with depression or anxiety like I did, then that should be your priority. Incorporate a full program (mental, physical, spiritual and emotional) that builds towards mental and emotional health. That is your ACTION in your law of attrACTION. It is my experience that when I made my mental and emotional health my PRIORITY, things started to shift in a POSITIVE way.

You deserve a fulfilling life. Start today. Create the life you deserve.

With a smile,

Tina
